Professor Lawrence Hirst has conducted clinical research into pterygium for the past 35 years and has contributed more to the peer-reviewed scientific literature on this subject than any other single Australian or overseas researcher.
P.E.R.F.E.C.T. for PTERYGIUM® was been pioneered by Professor Lawrence Hirst over the past 25 years and has now been used in over 4000 patients. It is the end result of careful and painstaking changes to existing surgical techniques.
Professor Lawrence Hirst has used this method exclusively for the last 22 years and it has resulted in the best results reported in the world’s scientific literature.
A recurrence of the removed pterygium is extremely rare using P.E.R.F.E.C.T. for PTERYGIUM® and equally importantly, the cosmetic appearance as a result of this procedure is superb. In fact, a year after the surgery, most people looking at a patient cannot tell which eye has had the surgery!
P.E.R.F.E.C.T. for PTERYGIUM® is a surgery that can be recommended for patients in whom the pterygium is causing problems as well as those who are concerned about its appearance.
Now, PARTNERS in P.E.R.F.E.C.T. for PTERYGIUM® makes this technique available in other geographic areas by accredited practitioners. The first PARTNER was Dr Katherine Smallcombe who completed a Fellowship with Professor Hirst. Then, Dr Todd Goodwin in Townsville completed a Fellowship and provides this technique in North Queensland. Following this Dr Juanita Pappalardo in Brisbane and Dr Brett Drury at the Gold Coast have perfected the technique following an extensive training period with Professor Hirst.
Now that there are another four ophthalmologists providing this surgery in Queensland, Professor Lawrence Hirst is no longer providing direct patient care, either consultation or surgery, but instead will continue to train other interested ophthalmologists from states other than Queensland.
